ex-alcoholics. But they do know that alcoholics can become recovered
alcoholics.
Anonymity is inherent in the AA program.
Only first names are used. Even those names are not disclosed outside of
the group. No records of address, age, occupation, etc. are kept. No
member signs anything. And there are no rules for attending meetings.
People come and go, or stop attending altogether. No questions are ever
asked. No member ever says to another: This is what you should do.
Recovered alcoholics sometimes say: This is what I did.
When an alcoholic approaches AA, the person is not asked to stop
drinking for a week or a month. Request: Don't take a drink for just 24
hours. The theory is one day at a time without a drink.
Motto: If we feel the urge for a drink, we neither yield nor desist. We
merely put off taking that drink until tomorrow. That's the philosophy
behind AA, which is made up of local groups of men and women in
thousands of communities.
AA does not recruit members, nor does it solicit or accept outside
funds. The small sums necessary for its existence are donated by those
who attend meetings, where a hat is passed.

Alcohol Without Hangovers: Some hangover discomfort is caused by
congeners (toxic chemicals formed during fermentation). Vodka has the
lowest congener content, gin next. Blended scotch has four times the
congener content of gin. Brandy, rum, and pure malt scotch have six
times that amount; bourbon eight times.
Retard the absorption of alcohol by eating before and during drinking
(especially foods containing fatter proteins, such as cheeses).
Use water as a mixer. Carbonation speeds the absorption of alcohol.
If you get a hangover anyway, the only known cure is rest, aspirin, and
time. An endless roster of other remedies-ranging from cucumber juice
and salt to a Bloody Mary has more to do with drinking mythology than
with medical fact, although according to psychologists who have studied
hangovers, if you believe in a cure, it may help.
When Alcohol Is Good For You: • People who consume about three alcoholic
drinks per day have lower mortality rates than do abstainers or heavy
drinkers. Nondrinkers are more likely to die of coronary heart disease,
while those consuming four or more alcoholic drinks per day are more
often done in by liver and lung ailments and car accidents.
• Menstrual cramps can occasionally be eased by a red wine concoction.
Recipe: Put a chamomile teabag in a cup and soak it with two tablespoons
of red Burgundy wine. Pour in boiling water and allow to steep for
several minutes. Drink. Repeat two or three times an hour.
• Two glasses of wine a day can supply about half the nutritional need
for chromium. Many Americans are deficient in this important mineral.
Low chromium levels have been linked in animal studies to abnormal heart
rhythms, metabolic disturbances, and other severe problems. Chromium
depletion in Americans is probably caused by their heavy consumption of
refined white sugar and other highly processed carbohydrates.
Drinking moderate amounts of wine may also help prevent heart attacks by
helping to clean cholesterol from arteries. And there is good news for
nondrinkers, too: Plain grape juice is also a good source of chromium.
