Fewer and fewer people are intimidated by auctions. During an Americana
sale, for instance, where items went on view about a week before the
auction, many of the people had never even been to an auction house
before, and knew little about the procedure.
People now realize that auctions are a good way to acquire items for a
collection. Attending one can be like going to a museum or an art show,
only better, since you can actually handle the merchandise.
While the glitter and social aspects of auctions have
attracted attention in the press, that is merely part of the excitement.
The other side: Many items are now within the reach of a broad
collecting group. Some two-thirds of all items auctioned in by Sotheby
Parke Bernet, the internationally famous auction house, cost under $
1,000.
Don't feel pressured to bid: Not all who attend auctions are
high-powered collectors or specialist dealers. People come for the
thrill of the exhibit or to learn about objets dart.
Then they may start collecting. Some 25% to 50% of the people at the
auction are there just to watch. At times there may be only a dozen
serious bidders at the sale. On other occasions, 50 to 100 bidders may
compete on a single lot (one item). Exception: Very important sales,
such as those of Impressionist paintings selling from $ 100,000 to over
$1 million, are reserved for known collectors and dealers, and are so
conducted. Tickets may be available to onlookers for seats in an
auxiliary auction room, equipped with video screens and loudspeakers.
The average session lasts two hours, with a lunch break between morning
and afternoon auctions. Sessions for outstanding, extensive collections
have been known to last several days.

If you are interested in acquiring an item:
Get the auction house's catalog for the appropriate auction. Cost: for
a single catalog. A year's catalogs in your field of interest: . Look
at the low and high estimates for the items you like. Examine the items
during the period of time they are exhibited before the auction. Use
the services of the auction house, if you need to. What's available:
Customer-service representatives who walk the exhibit floor and tell
people whether certain pieces are good examples of a particular style,
or may be less desirable. Also, catalogers and experts who can tell you
which are the best objects in the sale.

If you are thinking of starting a collection:
Catalogers and experts can advise you which pieces are good ones to
start off your collection. Point: Some education and homework are
necessary before you plunge into collecting. The expert may point to a
repair in an Oriental carpet or a restoration in a piece of furniture
that might make it serviceable for a home but not appropriate as a
cornerstone for a serious collection.
Learning about pricing and periods: Visit a few dealers' stores. See the
prices they want for comparable items. Compare them to the auction
estimates. Another idea: For items to decorate your home, such as
furniture, rugs, and porcelain, look at what department stores charge
for similar decor, especially modern reproductions. Example: A
good-quality, 18th¬century Georgian chest of drawers sells for no more
than a modern reproduction of the same piece (about $800). Paradox:
While the antique may appreciate in value, the reproduction will
probably depreciate.
A few weekends of looking through antique stores and at modern
reproductions as well as at catalogs will give you a good sense of the
price levels of various objects. You may not be able to figure out what
a rare specimen from Chippendale's workshop costs. But that is for a
serious collector. You should be able to determine the price of a
mainstream chest of drawers.
Getting set: Arrive at the auction about 30 to 45
minutes early, to get a good seat so that you have a good view of the
auctioneer and, more important, to let the auctioneer have a good view
of you. If you are interested in a specific piece, the chronological
catalog will give you an idea of when it will be put on the block.
Bidding against the dealers: It is not the cloak-and-dagger trap some
people make it out to be. Why: Dealers have to resell that object
through an antique store, or wholesale it to another dealer. Key: As a
consumer, you have the edge, since you are not looking for a large
profit (up to 100 % ). Therefore, even if you pay more than a dealer
pays, you still have a bargain in terms of what the item might cost you
retail.
Paying up: The auction house tacks an additional commission onto your
purchase. Therefore, if you buy an item for $3,000, expect to pay
$3,300. No one will ask beforehand whether you can afford your bid, but
when you settle after the auction you pay immediately, using cash or a
personal or certified check. You don't need identification. The
auction
house calls your bank on the spot.
