DEVELOP AND PUBLICIZE NEW SKILLS
An important survival tactic in today's workplace is to continually
develop job-related skills. Developing such skills pays a double
dividend if you let others know of your new prowess. You will also come
across to others as being self-confident. The reason is that most people
realize it takes courage and confidence to learn a new complex skill.
Bruce Craig, an engineering technician, provides a deft application of
this tactic. In his words:
Several years ago a new piece of testing equipment was installed in our
lab. While the installation was being performed, I purposely watched.
Immediately, everyone assumed that I knew all about the equipment
because I had watched the installation. Also, many made casual
references to the fact that I could operate the new equipment.
Running the new equipment became a grudging task at times because it
contained so many parts. Nevertheless, my efforts paid off. My worth to
the organization increased because everyone else knew less about the
equipment than I did. At one point I fixed the equipment when it broke
down. I could tell how people admired my confidence.
For my efforts, I received a certificate for a dinner for two. While
giving me the award, our manager stated how important it was to have an
in-house expert on the equipment. We therefore were not dependent upon
help from outside the department. My next salary increase was above
average.
Learning how to operate and repair the new equipment helped me earn the
big increase.
When You're Ready To Change Jobs: Before exploring a job
change, an executive should ask the following questions:
Are all my abilities being used at my current job?
Am I being paid according to my skills and the standard salary scale in
the marketplace?
Are there continued opportunities for advancement and promotion?
Example: If the boss is only two or three years older, there can be a
real problem moving into his position.
Are my family and I happy in our present geographical locale?
If the answer to any of these questions is negative, start quietly to
look around for a new job. Do not wait until you are unhappy before
looking for the change. When too much time is allowed to go by, you
frequently take the first job offered in order to get out of an
uncomfortable situation.
Many executives keep their resumes on file with an executive placement
service because they are willing to change jobs under ideal conditions.
It costs nothing. In addition the search firm offers broad coverage,
something executives cannot achieve through their own networks.
Caution: Unless you are currently unemployed, answering advertisements
with box number replies should be avoided altogether. Reason: You have
no control over confidentiality. Your application, or news of it, may
easily get back to your company.
If recruiters publicize your job hunt, they damage their reputation for
confidentiality, so you can be assured they will keep it a secret.
The Job Hunt:
A job hunt can do more than land you a new position; it can help prepare
you for it.
It is one of the few times in your career when competitors, customers,
and suppliers will talk openly with you. Talk to anyone who will see
you, even if the position offered sounds unappealing, or even if there's
no position available. Questions you can ask-and which will be freely
answered-might include: What problem areas would I have at your company?
What are its weaknesses? Is the company losing its best marketing man?
Does it have production problems? Why does it lose customers? How does
it gain them?
You may be meeting people you will want to hire, or avoid hiring, later
on in your new job. If you're looking at the customers' and suppliers'
sides of a business, you're in a position to make valuable industry
contacts.
To gain a more general industry perspective, you might ask: What is the
company's marketing strategy? How does it perceive its market? Are
customers becoming more sensitive to prices? To services? The company
you don't go to work for may have solved problems you'll encounter at
another job.
Finally, there's the chance to learn more about yourself. What excites
you in a given position? What turns you off? Does the prospect of
revitalizing a sales department seem appealing or painful and tedious?
If you get turned down, ask why. What are your weaknesses? Are you
projecting negative qualities you don't really have?
