This article discusses buy rental car. Large car-rental firms sell their fleet's better used cars to the public.
The cars sold are predominantly the previous year's models. Range: From sub compact to station wagon. Check the national organization of car-rental firms for the sales locations. Since there isn't a complete selection at a specific location, call the nearby one first. They may be able to tell when a certain model will arrive or offer to get it from another location.
Caution: Prices and warranties can vary dramatically from firm to firm.
Since there is much suspicion about the abuse rental cars take from poor drivers, buyers are supplied with a record of all service that's ever been performed on the car. Policy:
If $ 700 or more has been spent on repairing body damage or on recurring maintenance problems, then the rental company will not sell the car to the general public.
Some firms give a weekend rental period, enabling a potential buyer to test the car. This gives the buyer the opportunity to get an independent opinion about the car and to review its service record. The price of the weekend's rental can be applied to the car's cost. See
rental car for more information.

Understanding Car Warranties: Auto warranties usually contain language that seems to limit liability to the repair or replacement of defective parts. But this will not bar a lawsuit based on personal injuries caused by a defect. Also: If the car company or dealer refuses to make repairs called for by the warranty, it may be held liable for any subsequent property damage. Some courts have even extended liability for damages when the company tried to correct the problem and failed.

Automaker Secret: One of the best-kept secrets of the automobile industry is the existence of informal warranties. How they work: When a significant number of new-model cars are reported to have the same mechanical problem, the manufacturer may inform regional sales offices and car dealers that it will cover the cost of repair-beyond the standard warranty.
Problem: Neither manufacturers nor dealers publicize these warranties. Solution: If your car has a malfunction that may be covered under one of these warranties, write to the Center for Auto Safety,* an auto-complaint clearinghouse that tracks corporate memoranda, bulletins to regional offices and dealers, and car-owner complaints to deduce which components are likely to fall under informal warranties. Tell the Center the automobile's year, model, and problem, and they will send you pertinent information.
If the malfunctioning component appears to be covered, speak with the dealer's service manager for repairs ... and if he or she won't fix the problem, contact the factory's regional office and ask the factory representative to mediate.
Last resort: Take the dealer to small-claims court or seek arbitration through the Better Business Bureau. You'll have a good chance of winning if you're armed with documentation.

Car Out Of Control: Brake failure on a downhill grade: First pump the brake to build up pressure. Shift into low gear, and gradually apply the parking brake. Last resort: Bring the car to a stop by sideswiping a guard rail, a snowbank, or bushes.
Simultaneous failure of power brakes and power steering: Steer firmly and brake hard. It is still possible to maintain control without the power-assist system, which is usually where the trouble lies.
Gas pedal sticks: Brake and turn the ignition to Off (not to LOCK).

Driver's Rights When Stopped By A Police Officer: When stopped by a police officer while operating a car (or other motor vehicle), you have certain rights.
The officer can only stop a vehicle for an infraction, not for an indiscriminate safety check. Exceptions: A police roadblock, or a consistent search of every loath or 1,OOOth car for information purposes.
If halted for a relatively simple traffic violation, like running a red light, it's illegal for an officer to search you or your vehicle. Sometimes an officer will ask consent to search ("Mind if I look through the trunk?"). You don't have to give permission. If he searches anyway, complain later.
If you're arrested for not producing an insurance or registration card, for instance, the officer can make a body search and search the area within your reach.
A complete search of your car may be done only at the police station even if you are arrested. Otherwise, an officer must have a warrant that specifies exactly what is sought and where. These are your constitutional rights.
