This article discusses buy discount diamonds on the web, wholesale loose diamonds for sale. Investment-grade diamonds are an alternative to gold, silver, and collectibles as a hedge against inflation, and hold up particularly well in periods of recession. Diamonds are less volatile than precious metals. (Reason: DeBeers has a virtual monopoly on the wholesale diamond market.) Some international investors find diamonds attractive because they are very easy to transport and can often be sold without any record. However, diamonds are also a much more complicated investment than silver or gold.
Determine whether the investment fits your needs. Diamonds can only bring capital appreciation. If you need income, choose something else. Financial planners recommend that investors keep no more than 10% of their net worth in diamonds.
Expect to hold on to diamonds for at least two years. In an unusual year, like 1979, diamonds appreciated fast enough to outpace both inflation and the dealer's commission. But normally, even with good appreciation, you must hold it for two years to make it pay.

Study the grades and characteristics of diamonds. Each one is unique. Your investment is only as good as the quality of the stone. Investment-grade stones should be certified by an independent lab such as the Gemological Institute of America. Avoid dealers who don't provide certification.
Diamonds are rated on four characteristics, which determine their value and liquidity:
Carat weight: A carat is 1/5 of a gram, or 1/142 of an ounce. Diamonds over a carat offer more liquidity. Historically they have had the greatest appreciation. Some firms warn against buying any stone under a carat for investment. However, others believe that half-carat stones and larger will be the next group to experience a large price run-up.
Avoid stones that are under half a carat. It is doubtful that they will have any major price rise. Trap: Diamonds that are just short of a carat (.96 to .99). They are much less valuable than a one-carat stone.
Color: The finest stones are white. Stones are graded from D to Z (colorless to murky yellow). Conservative investors believe H to be the lowest worthwhile investment. Some risk-oriented investors believe I and J will have some future appreciation. The top grades are the most liquid.
Clarity: There are flaws in all diamonds.
Flawless means there are no imperfections visible under a microscope that magnifies ten times. VVSl and VVS2 have very slight flaws seen under a IOx microscope and are considered sound. The lower quality VSl and VS2 stones are shaky investments, since they are much more plentiful than VVSl and VVS2 diamonds.
Cut: The cut of a diamond is extremely important in determining its value. The greatest demand is for round, brilliant-cut stones. The depth and symmetry of the stone should be in proper relation to each other to maximize the brilliance.
Expect dealers to charge a percentage over the wholesale price. That charge can vary from 5 % to 40 %. The wholesale price varies also. Despite quotations, which now appear in The Wall Street Journal each Monday, dealers may ask different prices. Reason: The quotations are approximate. Check for the best price.
Colored gems are a very speculative investment. Although rubies, emeralds, and sapphires have appreciated along with diamonds recently, there is no uniform grading system for them, and their prices are extremely unpredictable. But some investors believe that their scarcity may eventually make them an even better investment than diamonds.

Even though diamonds are the hardest natural substance, they require special care to prevent damage and to keep them looking their best. Suggestions: Remove rings when doing manual work. Have your jeweler periodically check the mountings.
It is also important to clean diamonds at regular intervals. Methods:
Using mild detergent and warm water, you should rub it with a soft brush and dry with a lint-free cloth.
Soak for 30 minutes in a 50/50 solution of cold water and ammonia.
Dip the diamond into a commercial liquid cleaner, which is available from jewelers.
Use an ultrasonic cleaner, which is also commercially available.
