• Spotting a choking victim. Someone who is choking shows the same
symptoms as a heart-attack victim. They take on a bluish cast, sweat
freely, and appear apprehensive, even frantic. Difference: The
heart-attack victim can usually explain what's happening. The person
choking can't say a word. Point: If ever you are choking on something
stuck in your throat, point to your mouth.

• Burn treatment. Minor burns should be soaked in tepid, not cold, water
or, worse yet, ice. Reason: The use of extreme cold on the sensitive
burned skin can result in an ice burn in addition to the one already
received
• Emergency dressings can be fashioned out of sanitary napkins. Cut the
sanitary napkin to the right size and let the wound drain into it.
• Strains and sprains. Apply an ice pack for the first 24 hours to
relieve swelling. Follow with warm compresses or heating pads to
increase blood flow and stimulate healing in afflicted area. Rest and
take aspirin for the pain. If pain, swelling, or discoloration persists,
see a doctor.
• Foot blister. Wash it with soap and water, and puncture it with a
sterile needle to let the fluid drain out. Protect the area with a
bandage. Important: Don't remove the skin over the popped blister.
Reason: It protects the tender new tissue underneath.
• Getting a ring off a swollen finger. Lubricate the finger with oil or
grease. Then begin winding soft, strong string around the finger. Start
at the top joint near the nail. When you reach the ring, pass the string
between the ring and the finger using a tweezer prong to push it
through. Now unwind the string from the palm side of the ring, pushing
the ring up with each revolution. Caution: Don't use this method if the
finger is swollen from infection, or is badly cut.

Getting Fast Emergency Medical Care: Inside information: If you arrive
at a hospital by ambulance, you usually will receive a higher priority
... even if you could have gotten to the hospital without the ambulance.
If your condition is serious enough that taking an ambulance isn't
frivolous, it's a good strategy to call one. Best: Arriving in the
hospital's own ambulance, because you automatically become one of the
hospital's patients ... and its patients receive priority.

hospital. Helpful:
Call the ambulance a "bus' the inside term used by police. Aim: To get
them to assume that you or a close relative is a cop and render service
accordingly.
Handling Medical Emergencies: Persons who are first on the scene at an
emergency have a special responsibility. What to do:
Check the victim's breathing. Use your finger to make sure that the
tongue is not blocking the respiratory passage. If necessary, turn the
head to one side to allow spit and vomit to drain away.
Stop bleeding by pressing clothing against the wound.
Protect the victim from further harm, but move the person only if there
is danger at the spot where the accident occurred. If the victim is
conscious, have him lie down and remain still.
Treat for shock by keeping the victim warm but not hot. If injuries
permit, loosen tight clothing and place him on his back, with legs
elevated 18 inches.
Caution: Do no more than you know. People not trained in first aid can
sometimes do more harm that good. If you are the most qualified person
available, stay with the victim and send someone else for help.
Midafternoon Fatigue: Many people go through a valley
of fatigue, which occurs for a couple of hours between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
each workday during prime working time. How to avoid it:
Start with a physical checkup by your physician. Get an eye examination,
too. Eyestrain is a prime cause of fatigue.
Rearrange the day. Schedule challenging or pleasant tasks for the
midafternoon.
Check the physical environment, especially temperature, humidity,
sunlight, and air conditioning. See if there's a correlation between
these and your personal energy levels.
Vary the morning routine. Take a IS-minute coffee break in midmorning.
Get away from the desk at lunch time for at least an hour.
Cut down on your lunchtime food and drink.
