Here is a list of little-known health hazards:
• Aluminum cooking pans should be thrown out if corroded or marked with
pits surrounded by white deposits. New evidence indicates that food
cooked in corroded aluminum pans absorbs the metal. Possible results:
Impaired kidney function, brain and nerve cell problems, and behavioral
abnormalities..
• Foam insulation releases formaldehyde gas after installation in a
house. Effects on those susceptible: Respiratory problems, eye
irritation, skin rashes, nausea, headaches, dizziness. What to do: Some
local health departments test for formaldehyde in the air. Many private
laboratories provide the service for a modest fee.
See

for more information.
• Electric blankets are a hazard to people with occlusive arterial
disease. Uncontrolled heat may lead to gangrene by increasing metabolism
but not circulation.
• Hair dye hazard. Paraphenylenediamine, a common ingredient in hair
dyes, has been found to damage the lens of the eye. Some 89% of the
long-term hair-dye users tested had developed cataract problems. The
extent correlated with the frequency and duration of use.
• Alcohol and allergies. Sensitivity to foods may increase when they are
consumed with or at around the same time as alcohol. Have physician
check further when allergy to alcohol is suggested. It may actually be
an allergy to a food.
• Mascara hazard. Bacteria buildup in opened tubes of mascara leads to
eye infections. Prevention: Discard all open containers of mascara after
six months or less.
• Caffeine can produce the same symptoms as anxiety neurosis: Insomnia,
muscle twitching, headache, restlessness, and irritability. Drinking
three or four cups of cola, coffee, or tea daily is probably okay, but
more can result in bad side effects. Note: Some headache remedies
contain caffeine and boost intake considerably.
• Prescribed drugs can cause more harm than good if combined with other
medications or even some foods. Recommended: Ask the doctor about what
should and should not be taken with all prescriptions you and family
members are given.
• Vitamin C and aspirin should not be taken together. Studies at the
University of Southern Illinois indicate that combined heavy doses
produce excessive stomach irritation, could lead to ulcers.

• Use eye drops sparingly, especially commercial brands. Reason: They
relieve redness by constricting blood vessels so eyes will look whiter.
If used frequently, varicose veins can develop and eyes will become
permanently reddened.
• Kidney failures may be brought on by overuse of analgesics. Frequent
cause of damage: Mixture of aspirin and phenacetin or acetaminophen,
which is found in many painkillers sold over the counter as well as by
prescription.
• Toxic common plants. Plum pits, apple seeds, apricot pits, morning
glory seeds, English ivy, American ivy, holly, hyacinth, hydrangea,
lantana, Japanese yew, delphinium, Virginia creeper, lily of the valley,
daffodil bulbs, azalea, rhododendron, rhubarb leaf blades, sweet pea,
wisteria, nightshade, Jack-in-the-pulpit, water hemlock.
• Ice water can be harmful for people with heart disease. Reason: A
sudden drop in body temperature can cause an additional strain on the
heart. Chilled water poses no danger to most people. However, it can
cause stomach cramps if taken right after strenuous exercise, at which
time the body's internal temperature is elevated.
• Avoid using a copper utensil that puts the metal directly in contact
with food. Why:
Copper poisoning, which can be lethal. Basic rule: Use only lined
copperware. Check the lining periodically. When it becomes worn, have
the pot relined (or stop using it for food). Safer: Maximize heat
efficiency without risk by using copper-bottom pans. Beware: Utensils
made of brass (which contains copper).
• Biking hazard. Standard, narrow, hard leather bicycle seats may
compress nerves in the pubic area, leading to impaired sexual responses
in men and possibly women. Recommended: If necessary add extra seat
padding. Also: Give the seat a more downward slant.
• Nonstick cookware remains controversial.
Key component: Fluorocarbon resins. They impart traces of fluorides to
foods, making them toxic to fluoride-sensitive persons. Safety first:
Never overheat food in nonstick utensils. And be sure to discard the
cookware when the nonstick coating becomes scratched, or if the cookware
either chips or peels.
• Toxic metals can build up in tap water overnight because they leach
out of the plumbing. Defense: Run the tap for a few minutes. In
water-scarce areas, shower first, then make the coffee. Use the cold tap
for food and beverage preparation. Hot water, far more corrosive,
contains greater amounts of dangerous debris.
• Hazard at health clubs. Steam baths, saunas, and hot tubs induce
certain strains on the body. In the circulatory system, there is an
increase in blood pumped and pulse rate but a decrease in circulation
time. Meaning: The heart sends more blood to the skin for cooling
purposes and less to the vital organs. Even the feeling of relaxation
following the exposure to heat may be merely relief that it's over.
Upshot: Heat treatments should be used only by those with strong hearts.
They are not advised for people with hardening of the arteries,
hyperthyroid conditions, heart or lung disorders.
• Being too thin is as dangerous to your health as being too fat,
according to the results of a 24-year mortality study. The researchers
were surprised at the finding. They speculate that skinny individuals
smoked more than fat ones and that may have had some effect on the
statistics. Note: There is a thin line between healthy trim and
unhealthy emaciated.
