Photo Pop Art Online World Prices.
The fine-photography market is in an nascent stage similar to a
promising growth stock. Many feel it is the most exciting segment of the
world of art collecting. Their view: Fine photos may someday command
prices many times current levels, even comparable to the prices of fine
paintings.
Availability of masterpiece-quality photography is excellent. The very
best photos, by nearly every great photographer, can be purchased. The
most outstanding works are in $10,000 to $20,000 range. Paintings of
similar quality command from $100,000 to $1 million.
Demand is likely to grow more strongly than it has in the past, as
collecting and displaying photographs gains acceptance. The pace of
sales is picking up momentum. Reason: More art lovers can afford to
collect masterpieces of photography than nearly any other art form. It
has also become more fashionable and is attracting a new audience.

Learning about fine photographs: As in all art collecting, it is best to
get a firm understanding of the periods and styles of photography. Then
choose one or two that you enjoy the most. It is fairly easy to get
acquainted with the best. Bonus: You may find it makes you more
interested in history.
Periods in photography:
1837 to 1850. When the daguerreotype was first perfected in France and
salt-print photographs were first developed in England.
1850 to 1860. The great period of French photography.
1860 to 1880. Height of topographical photography: Exotic photos of
China, India, Egypt, and Japan. Also the beginning of the careers of
great American photographers such as Carleton E. Watkins and William
Henry Jackson.
1880 to 1900. End of the topographical period and the beginning of
pictorials. Important photographer: Peter Henry Emerson and his
naturalistic photography.
1900 to 1920. Photo-Secessionist Period:
Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Alvin Landon Coburn, and Gertrude
Kasebier.
1920 to 1930. In Europe, the beginning of the avant-garde group: Laszlo
Moholy-Nagy, Man Ray, Andre Kertesz. In the United States, the
beginnings of photojournalistic social realism.

1930 to 1940. Height of photojournalism:
Erich Salomon, Berenice Abbott, and Margaret Bourke-White.
1940s. Advent of color photography.
Key: As in all art collecting, masterpieces will appreciate faster and
more steadily than works of middle-range quality.
Scarcity: Some photographs are extremely rare. Great 19th-century
photographs are in editions of only three or four. Superb French
19th-century photographs are even rarer. Reason: In the 19th century,
there was no market for photos, so limited editions were made only for
friends. In addition, many have been destroyed.
Contrast: Today's photographers often make as many prints as needed to
meet the demand of people who will buy them. Important collecting point:
Buy only prints made by the photographer, not those commercially
produced. As each edition of 10 or 20 prints made by a recognized master
is bought, the price of ensuing editions may go up. Example: Ansel Adams
has made over 1,000 prints of Moonrise, Hernandez, N.M., his most
popular work. Yet, it still brings the highest price of any of his
works. Obviously, scarcity is not necessarily a factor in price.
Alternate ways to collect photographs: Buy stereographs
(three-dimensional photographs), illustrated books, pictures with
subjects that particularly interest you (such as automobiles, boats, or
birds), special movements, themes such as portraiture, nudes, or
interiors.
Don't expect your attic collection of family photographs to gain in
value. Portrait photography was the rage in the late 19th century.
Everyone had portraits taken then. Unless the photographer is well known
or the subject matter is of unusual interest, the only thing the family
photograph album is good for is nostalgia.
Group investments in fine photos can provide a hedge
against volatility in the pricing of one or two artists. An investment
group of five or more people can buy a wide variety of photographers and
periods.
In one such case, the group agreed to hold the prints for appreciation
for five years. In the meantime, each member keeps one or two prints in
his home, with the option of exchanging them for others if he tires of
them. Sidelight: If an investor grows so fond of a particular print that
he wants to keep it, he can purchase it from the group at the current
market price.
