A Negotiation Tip

GRANT NO-COST AND LOW-COST CONCESSIONS
A simple yet effective negotiating tactic is to grant the other side concessions that are of no cost, or of low cost to you. Robert J. Laser, a negotiating specialist, concludes: "In nearly every negotiation, there are opportunities for you to give concessions to the other party that are valuable to him or her but of little value to you.
Giveaways are important because they have the psychological effect of making the other side feel rewarded and appreciated. It is also possible that what is useless or unimportant to you is valued by the other side. Several years ago I conducted a house-contents sale of household items I wanted to replace or discard. Whatever I could sell was so much cash to the good. What I couldn't sell would serve the needs of charity and provide me a modest income tax deduction. Dozens of people flocked to my house in search of extra room furniture and hidden treasures. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the sale was progressing and how uncluttered my house was becoming.
Several of what I thought were hidden treasures were creating very little interest: four Italian Renaissance stone cherubs and two copper-and-glass chandeliers. I had taken down the chandeliers several years ago, and they were in basement storage. Finally, an antique dealer who specialized in kitsch eyed the cherubs fondly. As his head move right to left and back again I could tell he was vacillating. I said to the dealer, "Give me $150 for the four cherubs and you can have the two chandeliers as a bonus. I know if you polish them, they will have good resale value."
"1 assume a check is okay," said the dealer.
"Of course," I replied. "Let me help you up the stairs with the chandeliers."
Experiments conducted by negotiating researchers provide useful clues to the manner in which concessions should be granted. The most effective technique in most situations is to grant small concessions throughout the bargaining session. Granting concessions works from both the standpoint of the buyer and the seller. If you are a buyer, and therefore leading from strength, start with a low bid and give in very slowly over a long period of time. If you are a seller, and therefore leading from weakness, just turn it around. You begin with a high, but plausible, price and lower your price gradually over a long period.
An alternative to lowering one's price is to grant low cost, or no-cost concessions. As the buyer, you might offer to finance the purchase through the company if they meet your price. Also, you might offer to buy in larger quantities at a lower price. Still further, you might offer to purchase supplies in addition to the equipment. As the seller, you might offer to grant additional service or giveaway merchandise that you plan to dispose of at drastic reductions anyway. Giving additional service is only a no-cost or low-cost item if the workers providing the service are not already fully occupied.

How To Ease Into A New Job: When you change jobs-ease in, even if your mission is complete reorganization.
Priority 1: Get to know your staff. Know who gets things done, who doesn't. How, and how well.
Learn before you leap. Ask questions, solicit advice, don't be afraid to lean on staff in areas you aren't familiar with. Look to making small changes that require teamwork and cooperation, enable you to gauge subordinates, inspire their confidence in you as a learner as well as a leader. Cultivate the dissenters (they care and usually have something worth listening to); beware of quiet acquiescers: They may be waiting for you to make the first move.
Review your predecessor's records, correspondence, information flows for insight into his priorities, management methods, innovative successes and failures, problem solving techniques. Be sure you know the realities of your job before you discard his approaches.
Clarify interdepartmental interfaces as rapidly as possible. Look for access or admission to policy and planning committees, pertinent task forces, or other company groups that help give you perspective on overall goals and operations, insight into how your reorganization ideas could affect other departments.
