The male's prostate gland seems to cause an inordinate amount of
trouble. Most of it is not serious. The gland surrounds the base of the
urethra (the tube that emerges from the bladder and carries urine). By
squeezing fluid into the urethra, the prostate helps nourish and
transport sperm.
See
prostate treatment
for more information.
Major disorders: Acute prostatitis. An infection that's accompanied by a
sudden onset of fever, pain at the base of the penis, and uncontrolled
dripping of a cloudy fluid from the penis. It can be diagnosed through a
urine specimen. Treatable with antibiotics.
Benign prostatic enlargement. By age 60, almost all men have some degree
of enlargement. Symptoms: Difficulty in starting the flow of urine,
decreased force of the urinary stream, dribbling of urine after voiding
seems to be completed, and increased frequency of urination. Caused by
an overgrowth of glands, it's usually treated surgically. Note: Most
procedures do not result in impotence.
Cancer of the prostate. Grows at a slow pace. Not likely to spread
excessively or cause death. Removal of the obstruction is the usual
treatment. In the more malignant type of this cancer, radical prostate
surgery and radiation treatment may be employed. Most prostate growths
can be felt during a standard exam, which should be done at least
annually if a man is over 50 years old.
Preventing Prostate Trouble: Until 50 years ago, prostate disorders were
extremely rare. Modern culprit: Too much fat in today's diet. Best
prevention: Reduction of total calories, especially those from meat and
dairy products. Substitute more fruits and vegetables in the daily menu.
Prognosis: This is no sure cure, but a delaying action on the discomfort
and danger of prostate problems.

Impotence As A Sign Of Illness: Impotence is not
always a psychological problem. It is often the symptom of disease.
In a recent study of men with periodic impotence, three-quarters of them
had illnesses. Most common: Diabetes. Note: Both younger and older men
had illnesses, indicating that impotence among young men is not
automatically psychological.
Insight: Even when a disease causes impotence, there are psychological
ramifications. Example: Fear of failure, which may prolong the
condition.
Source: Study by Drs. Sallie Schumacher and Charles Lloyd, Bowman Gray
School of Medicine, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC 27109.
Impotence is often found in males suffering from high blood pressure.
Many patients think the problem is related to the drugs they take to
control hypertension. Fact: The drugs do not affect the frequency of
successful sexual intercourse, nor does sexual performance vary
according to the dosages of the medicines.
Hiatal Hernia: This condition, associated with
overeating, obesity, injury to the stomach, or a congenital deformity,
is fairly common, especially in older people. Symptoms: Chronic
heartburn or indigestion. Cause: A weakness in the diaphragm, which
allows the stomach to move up into the chest area alongside the
esophagus. Stomach acids are not tolerated by the esophagus and some
minor, but discomfort producing, damage may result. Treatment:
Taking antacids, establishing a light diet, avoiding raw fruits and
vegetables and juices, and keeping the head elevated at night. Surgical
repair is major surgery.
Alzheimer's Alert: Thiamine deficiency is often confused with
Alzheimer's disease. Recommended: Patients who continually suffer from
confusion, drowsiness, unstable gait, and other Alzheimer's-like
symptoms-and who may eat poorly as a result of heavy drinking-should
have a magnetic resonance imaging scan. This test can reveal the
existence of shrunken mamilary bodies in the brain.
Treatment: 50-100 milligrams of thiamine a day could alleviate the
symptoms. Foods high in thiamine: Wheat germ, pork, beef, liver, ham,
and certain nuts and beans.
Now, on some other matters: Salt Talk: How harmful is
salt? Answer: It depends. A majority of the population (about 80%) can
handle large doses. The average daily intake per person is about 4,500
mg. Contrast: The body demands only 200 mg. The excess is passed from
the body in normal waste.
Where salt is a problem: In the other 20% of the population, excess salt
stays in the blood. One result: High blood pressure (hypertension),
which can bring on a heart attack or stroke. Best bet: Avoid salt.
Reason:
Most people don't know if they are among the susceptible 20%.
Other reasons to avoid salt:
There is already plenty in many foods on most regular diets.
It builds up thirst, which means greater consumption of liquids and a
higher rate of water retention.
Fast-Food Scandal: Fast-food chains are required by law to label the
ingredients (and sometimes the nutritional contents) of their products,
yet they refuse to do so. Why? They're too embarrassed to admit just how
unhealthful their products really are. And the government simply does
not have the manpower to force them to comply. Results:
• Consumers with allergies to corn, wheat, MSG and other ingredients
commonly hidden in fast foods have no way of knowing which items to
avoid.
• Consumers go on eating foods they think are fried in vegetable fat-but
some fast-food restaurants use beef fat, a prime contributor to heart
disease, high blood pressure, and obesity.
• Weight-conscious consumers choose from the "light" menu, thinking they
are getting low-calorie foods. Yet the toppings on these items, as well
as the breading on the fish and chicken, are full of fat.
• Young consumers are developing poor eating habits that may last a
lifetime.
• High school students, prime consumers of fast foods, are already
developing clogged arteries and high blood pressure. These problems were
once confined to the elderly.
