therapy (with local injections of anesthetics and corticosteroids).
2. Vascular headaches (including migraine and cluster headaches) result
from dilation of blood vessels and cause pulsing pain (often on one
side). Most migraine sufferers inherit the affliction. Others can get
toxic vascular headaches from systemic vasodilation caused by fever,
alcohol, or nitrate intake, carbon dioxide retention, ete.
Treatment: Taken early enough in a migraine attack, the natural alkaloid
ergot acts to constrict blood vessels and relieve pain. Sedatives can
also help. Aspirin usually doesn't work, except in mild cases.
Prevention: Physicians usually prescribe doses of methysergide maleate
(Sansert R), cy¬proheptadine (Periactin R), or BC 105 (Sando¬migran), to
decrease the vascular changes that bring on migraines. Lithium therapy
sometimes works to prevent cluster headaches.
3. Traction and inflammation headaches are caused by brain tumors,
aneurysms, strokes, and other serious illnesses, or by disorders of the
eyes, ears, nose, throat, and teeth.
Treatment: The medicine's focus must be on the underlying disease.

Self-Massage For Headaches: The throb of a headache can be most
distressing. However, there is a quick and easy way to relieve yourself
from one. It's not by taking aspirin or any other chemical. Self massage
does it, in two stages. Method:
Sit down. Become aware of your breathing.
Let your head hang forward. Press with your fingers, particularly your
thumbs, into the aching area. Inhale and press in. Exhale as you release
the pressure. Press and rub all around the painful spot. Now press and
rub all parts of the head.
Be sensitive to yourself. Let your mind rest.
Stop thinking. Work systematically from the top of your forehead down to
your chin. Press along the scalp line, press all parts of your forehead,
your eyebrows, under your eyebrows, close your eyes and let your hands
cover them.
Relax. Massage in a circular motion your temples and your cheeks. Exert
pressure by pressing along your sinuses and nose. Continue the same
motion around your ears. Cover the ears for silence for awhile. Leave no
part of your face untouched.
Massage your scalp as if you were washing your hair. Gently pull your
hair too. Go back to the aching area and massage it. Make sure that your
tongue has been behind your front teeth, to relax your jaw. This first
stage should take a few minutes.
The head-roll: Now get down on your hands and knees, or in a crawl
position. Lower your head to the floor. Upon contact with the floor roll
your head forward and back. Repeat this about 10 times. This will
release tight neck and shoulder muscles.
When your head and neck feel loose enough, roll them also in diagonals
and circular patterns. After rolling your head for a few minutes and
massaging your head, you will feel refreshed, alert, and relaxed.
Heat Vs. Cold For Easing Pain: • Use heat (heating
pad) and muscle relaxation (a hot bath) for chronic pain. Drawback:
Heat deepens feelings of depression. Cold works best for acute
discomfort. Apply ice directly to the source of the pain for its numbing
effects. Trap: Both heat and cold work on the neural transmitters that
regulate pleasure and pain and may influence your feelings. Source: Free

• A heating pad should not be used on a bruise or other injury until at
least 48 hours after the accident. If used earlier, the heat will
increase the swelling. Ice or cold packs are better at first. (For
arthritis or other no injury aches and pains, heat is fine.) Caution:
Don't use heat for more than 20 minutes at a time. And never go to sleep
while the heating pad is on. Risks: Skin burn, electrical fire. Don't
use:
When asleep, with sensitive skin, with poor blood circulation, if
elderly, if diabetic, on areas treated with heat-producing medication
(liniment). Important: Never put next to bare skin. Never place under
the body, where heat can build up. Suggested: Instead, use a hot water
bottle where possible.
• Crushed ice applied for 30 minutes is still the best remedy for
swellings and sprains. New chemical ice packs just are not as effective.
Added nuisance: The covering splits easily and the leaking chemical
leaves white spots on clothing. Also: The real thing stays cold longer
and releases cold faster than the chemical ice packs.
• Cold compresses in an emergency: Use frozen food pouches from the home
freezer.
