Bulging eyes may also be a side effect of a malfunctioning thyroid
gland. They can be unsightly as well as uncomfortable. The eyelids
become shortened. The exposed portion of the eyes is subject to drying.
They are less protected from dust and injury. Plastic surgeons can
correct the condition by lengthening the muscles that control the lids,
thus allowing them to come together.
Hypothyroidism. Too little thyroid hormone. Symptoms: Intolerance of
cold, thickened skin, hoarseness, constipation, weight gain, general
apathy and fatigue, emotional changes that are easily confused with
depression. Treatment: The simple and safe use of a synthetic or natural
thyroid hormone.

deficiency in the diet is much more widespread than most people realize.
As much as 70% of the population may have a zinc deficiency, including
infants and children. Possible consequences: Stunted growth, impaired
healing and diminished sense of taste.
What to do: Eat food with high levels of zinc, such as fortified
cereals, red meat, liver, eggs, cheese, shellfish. Beware of
pharmaceutical zinc supplements. Too much zinc (more than 15 mg. per
day) can create a copper deficiency, which can lead to other health
problems.

immediately if it's been as long as five years since your last one.
Problem: Once you have been infected, medical techniques against tetanus
are only marginally effective. Mortality rate: 40% to 50%.
Symptoms: Rigid contractions of the facial muscles (lockjaw), followed
by muscle contractions in the arms, torso, and legs. Time:
Five to 10 days after injury. Since the lungs are affected, the cause of
death is asphyxiation.
Treatment: Use of a respirator, muscle relaxants, and tetanus
antitoxins. Allergic reactions to tetanus antitoxins are rare. However,
there is no test to predict such a reaction (called tetanus toxoid). If
a serious reaction results, it must be treated with adrenaline.
Bottom line: Tetanus is easy to prevent but perilous to cure. Keep up to
date on shots.
