This article discusses planting a home garden guide - gardening tips and advice. Here is a list of gardening tips for your home garden:
• Cut mowing time. A 36-inch mower does the job in half the time it takes an 18-inch one.
See home garden for more information.
• Fertilizer from your fireplace: Wood ashes make an excellent soil conditioner and natural fertilizer for delphiniums, lilacs, peonies, and roses.
• A hemlock hedge is unrivaled as a natural, graceful means of protecting your privacy. Advantages: The hedge is disease-free, requires no fertilizer, and holds up well through snow, extreme temperatures, or drought. To start a hedge: Plant four-year-old seedlings about two feet apart. Once the desired height and fullness are reached, cut back annually on the year's growth. Best: A hedge about six feet high.
• Miniature roses flourish indoors and bloom every six to eight weeks throughout fall and winter. Potted rosebushes grow to 12 inches high with one-inch blossoms. They need at least four hours of sunlight a day or 12 hours of fluorescent light. Bushes should be moved outside and planted (in their pots) for at least two months every spring, summer, or early fall.
• Repotting a houseplant. Moisten the soil well. Wait an hour. Then up-end the pot and rap it on something hard. The dirt ball should drop out, intact. Before transplanting it in a bigger pot, cover the drainage hole with plastic mosquito netting. Reason: It stops soil run-off, but doesn't take up space as pebbles do.
• Geraniums in winter. Keep the pot on a sunny windowsill and the flowers will continue blooming throughout the winter. Southern exposure is best, with at least three hours of direct sun daily. Care: Between watering, the soil should be permitted to dry out. The plant should also be misted every few days. A standard houseplant fertilizer should be added to the soil about once a month. To encourage growth, snip straggly stems and blossoms that fade. For consistent foliage, rotate the pot.
• Free citrus plants. Press plump, moist seeds from any citrus fruit into a rich potting mixture, and place on a windowsill which is warm and gets bright light. Keep soil damp. After two months: Transplant seedlings. Lift gently with two spoons. Place each in a two-inch pot in fast-draining soil mix. When the root ball fills the pot, transfer to a four-inch pot. Move again when necessary to successively larger pots. Keep mature plants in indirect light. Feed annually with a half-strength fertilizer. Citrus plants grown inside have glossy dark leaves, but no flowers or fruit.
• Basic bird feeding rules: (1) Feed birds in the fall only if you intend to continue during the winter. Reason: If they depend on a known supply of food, they won't gather their own. (2) When on winter vacation, leave an adequate supply or use a regulated feeder device. (3) To prevent cats, squirrels, and other animals from endangering the birds, place the feeder at least 5 feet above the ground and 15 feet from trees.
• To kill weeds and grass growing in driveway and sidewalk cracks: Pour household bleach in the cracks. The vegetation dies and is easily pulled out. The bleach keeps it from growing back. Also effective: Saturated salt, or rock salt dissolved in water.
