• Fish oil lowers the blood's cholesterol level. Recent test: Oil from
fresh salmon was substituted for saturated vegetable oil in the
volunteers' diet. Result: After four weeks, cholesterol levels dipped,
triglycerides dropped and the blood showed signs of reduced clotting.

more fish. Fishes rich in oil: Bluefish, flounder, haddock, halibut,
mackerel, Pollock, salmon, sardines, and shad.

Reviewing each day's problems at home every night.
Agreeing to every request. Never saying no. Accepting every invitation
to serve on a committee or sit on a board.
Using lunch as merely a midday setting for a business conference.
Taking shorter vacations than you're entitled to.
Refusing to delegate authority. Working at least 12 hours a day.
Smoking, drinking and overeating at night as a reward for putting in a
hard day.
Associating mainly with friends and business associates who also smoke,
overeat, and drink heavily.
Avoiding exercise because it's a waste of time.
An executive who has already slipped into nine of these 12 habits is a
likely candidate for the Coronary Club.

Reducing Chances Of A Second Heart Attack

Among the patients of Dr. Meyer Friedman, author of Type A Behavior, the
rate is 10%. This is what he tells them to do:
Diet? Yes, low fat. Eat mainly both fish and fowl. People cheat anyway,
says Friedman. But no heavy meals at night and no exercise within two
hours of a meal.
No smoking.
Moderate exercise. One hour a day, every day, rain or shine. No high
altitudes and absolutely no running or jogging, which Dr. Friedman
regards as something of a national disaster from any therapeutic
standpoint, especially for cardiac patients. Why? Because Americans tend
to be fanatics about everything they do, even relaxing. We jog our way
to emotional stress.
Heavy drinking (more than two jiggers a night) is also out.
Another way of life: Essential for the success of his program, says
Friedman. He trains patients in contingency planning-ways to avoid
situations that most commonly trigger heart attacks.
Rehearsal for emergencies is also definitely part of the new routine for
survival. Feel the pain at night? You have five minutes to do something
about it. Know just whom you are going to call-call your regular doctor
or another one. Rehearse carefully.
Modifying behavior: Reduce the self-generated stress that prompts the
coronary condition in the first place. Recognize yourself in Friedman's
description of Type A people, the ones he identifies as most prone to
heart attacks?
Excessive drive. Aggressive, though often they don't know it. Above all,
obsessed by time urgency and by getting more and more things done in
less and less time. (Time-sickness, Friedman calls it.) Continuously
upset by traffic jams, by people who don't explain things fast enough,
or by anything that impedes them.
Changing such behavior is not easy. But with professional help it can be
done, particularly if the person realizes that it is literally a matter
of life and death not to give in to 5 o'clock frenzy, to relax at lunch,
to seek consciously to be alone at certain times of day.
Where to start: Remember your successes.
Ask yourself, were you ever promoted or did you get a raise because you
were impatient? Did things faster? Were hostile or aggressive? This will
give you confidence to begin thoughtful self-analysis.
How to handle travel: Some 20% to 30% of all heart attacks occur just
before or just after travel. Friedman trains his patient/executives to
contingency plan for a business trip. Say he's going to New York for an
important conference on Monday, March 12:
Monday, March 5. Executive starts cleaning desk in preparation for the
trip. By the time he leaves work on Friday, the desk is clear except for
the plane tickets.
Sunday, March 11. He flies to New York.
Goes straight to hotel. Does not pick up the phone. Takes a mild
tranquilizer and goes to bed.
Monday, March 12. Tranquilizer, conference and back to the hotel.
Basic pattern to follow: Hotel. Meeting. Return to hotel.
