Jogging: Jogging is good for the cardiovascular system, but unless you
use good shoes, and the right running form, it's bad for your back.
Reason: It jolts the vertebrae. Better:
Swimming and bicycle riding. (Preferred: A stationary bike.)
Stretching: To keep your back limber, perform the exercises below three
times a day. This can be done in your office, and should take no more
than 20 minutes.
1. Push your buttocks back in the chair.
Straighten your upper back. Place forearms on the arms of the chair.
Lean forward as far as you can, then lean back. 25 times.
2. Sit on the edge of your chair. Straighten back. Hold head erect, chin
in. Place feet about 18 inches apart. Keeping back straight, reach down
sideways with your right hand, and try to touch the side of your right
foot. Do the same with your left hand. Alternate 25 times.
3. Stand with your body against the desk, legs apart. Place your hands
on the desk. Now touch with your forehead the surface of the desk. Then
come smartly to erect position. 25 times.
4. Stand with your feet apart, arms at sides.
Reach downward as far as possible with your right hand, and then your
left hand. Alternate 25 times.

subsides.
Because of its anti-inflammatory qualities, aspirin is a helpful drug
for back pain. For an acute attack, codeine can be prescribed, for
prolonged periods. But be careful, you can become dependent on it.
One of every four back problems is caused by foot problems. To protect
your feet and your back:
Wear flexible shoes that don't constrict
your feet.
Replace shoe heels that are run-down.
At home, go barefoot as much as possible. When sitting for long
stretches of time, ro-
tate your feet and wiggle your toes.
Don't wear tight socks. A sock should be three-quarters of an inch
longer than your foot.
Women must not wear extremely high heels with pointed toes for long
periods-if at all. Because of high heels, four times more women than men
have foot problems. Example:
Forty times more women require bunion surgery. Maximum heel height for
women's 'shoes: Two inches.
Two exercises to strengthen your feet:
Walk on the outer edges of your feet, taking short steps.
Stand lock-kneed, with legs crossed, like scissors. Distribute your
weight evenly on both feet. Hold this stance for a minute, then reverse
the position of your feet.
