Causes: Warts are tumors caused by a virus.
They are most active during the years of puberty, but anyone-from
infants to elderly people-can get them.
We don't know exactly what causes warts to appear. They are contagious,
but at a low level. This means that repeated contact is needed, and
infection is slow to occur. Trauma may trigger the appearance of warts,
whether the trauma is an injury to the site where the warts occur or an
emotional upset. One theory holds that everyone always carries a wart
virus, but occurrence results only with a breakdown in the immunological
system.
There are five different types of warts:
Common: Bumpy. Occur most often on hands and fingers.
Filoform: Tiny, fingerlike projections, usually found on the face.
Flat: Small, barely raised tumors. Clustering on the neck or the back of
the hands.
Plantar: Flat, rapidly clustering blemishes.
Occur only on the soles of the feet. Because of their location and the
discomfort to the patient, they are the most difficult wart to treat.
Genital: Occur on the skin and mucous membranes of the genital region.
Sometimes spread through sexual contact. Parents sometimes transmit
warts to infants' genital areas while diapering them.
Cures: Over-the-counter wart removers are generally ineffective. They
are sometimes sufficient for a small common wart. If the drugstore cure
hasn't worked in a week or two, see a physician.

Eliminating warts requires complete
destruction of the virus that caused them as well as the tumor itself.
All current treatments are performed in a doctor's office. Usually, a
single visit to the doctor will suffice.
Among the treatments currently in use:
Electro-desiccation: After an injection with a local anesthetic, the
area of the wart is burned with an electric needle. This is the quickest
and most widely used treatment. The aftermath may be a slight, brief
pain. The wound heals in a few days.
Acid plasters: Applied with an adhesive, these are painless but can
require two to six weeks for full healing. Usually used to get rid of
plantar warts. Acid plasters must be prescribed by a physician, who
teaches the patient how to replace them as needed.
Blistering solution: An extremely powerful agent, it softens the wart
and surrounding tissue, which then falls off.
Dry ice (applied) or liquid nitrogen (sprayed): These also induce
blistering, followed by softening and dropping off.
Podophyllin: This drug arrests cell replication and destroys a wart by
stopping its growth process. The medication can be very painful to
surrounding tissue.
In the future, a wart vaccine may become available. Such an immunizing
agent is currently available in a crude form, but tests presently
indicate that it is no more effective than a placebo.
