Honus Wagner has sold for $32,000. The American Tobacco Company issued

Nap Lajoie, 1934, $9,500; Jim Konstanty, 1951, $4,500; Mickey Mantle,

Valuable Autographs: Signatures of famous people are
collector's items that hold their value in good times and bad. But
autograph collecting is not limited to just signatures. Look for signed
letters, documents, manuscripts, and photographs.
How to start:
Scout local dealers and collectors. Auction galleries often specialize
in autographs.
Search through attics and antique shops. Write to celebrities who appeal
to you and request their signatures.
Most valuable:
Rare signatures. For example, the autographs of Button Gwinnett and
Thomas Lynch, Jr. are now worth $100,000 each. Reason: They are both
Founding Fathers who died shortly after they signed the Declaration of
Independence.
Signatures from Hollywood's Golden Age of the 1920s and 1930s. An
autographed photo of Clark Gable is valued at $200. A handwritten letter
from Greta Garbo may be worth more than one signed by Abraham Lincoln.
An autographed Garbo photograph fetches up to $1,000.
Sports heroes. The only field of real value is baseball. Top signatures:
Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Suggestion: For the autograph of a ballplayer
enshrined in the Hall of Fame, write to him: clo The Baseball Hall of
Fame, Cooperstown, NY 13326.
Famous criminals. An autographed photo of Al Capone sold recently for
$750. A document signed by Adolf Hitler brings $500. A deportation order
signed by Adolf Eichmann is currently valued at twice that price.
Historical documents. These vary in value according to the occasion.
General Eisenhower's signed announcement of victory in Europe changed
hands for $45,000. A document signed by Napoleon goes for $500.

Collectibles Under $ 500: American Art Pottery
Shortly after the Civil War, American art pottery originated in a
Cincinnati factory named Rookwood. As a reaction against the Industrial
Revolution, it was deliberately meant to be artistic rather than
commercial. Art pottery features striking glazes. Some pieces are hand
thrown, while others are machine-made and glazed by artists.
Prices: Depend on the maker and where you find the piece. Why: You may
find very important pieces in good New York galleries like Jordan Volpe,
but they may cost thousands of dollars. However, since many people are
unaware of the value of art pottery, you may find pieces for under $100
at country auctions and garage sales.
Before buying: Research to develop your eye.* Some museums have
collections of American pottery.
For the best collection: Find a style you like and a price range you are
comfortable with. Point: Since they are not masterpieces, you must get a
group of similar pieces to look impressive. Possibilities: All the same
shape with different glazes. Or, all the same glaze with different
shapes.
Some important styles:
Rookwood: 1880 to 1949. Decorative vases and tiles. The early pieces are
hand painted and signed by the artist. Those pieces sell for up to
$10,000. Caption: Some pieces marked with dates from 1880 to 1886 and
impressed with the Rookwood symbol are actually copies made in the late
1960s. But you can still buy legitimate pieces for around $500.
Ohr: 1883 to 1906. Handmade pottery with unusual, eccentric and delicate
shapes. Many resemble today's modern art. Prices are going up very
quickly for the work of this man who called himself the world's greatest
potter. There's great collector interest in these pieces. You can still
buy small pieces for $500.
Grueby: 1897 to 1920. They made natural and organic shapes in art
pottery and tiles. Most famous: Cucumber-green matte glaze. Few sell for
less than $1,000, but you might find small pieces for $500.
Clifton: 1901 to 1910. These are signed and dated. If you are lucky, you
may find one for $200. Look for Crystal Patina and Indian Ware. They are
getting rarer, as many have been broken or lost (a common problem).
Teco: 1902 to 1923. The Teco glaze (almost always a matte green) is not
nearly as important as the form of the piece. The factory produced art
tiles for Frank Lloyd Wright. There are still some pieces for under $
500.
Niloak: 1909 to 1946. All pieces have been hand turned from multicolored
clays. Cost $90 to $300.
Fulper: 1910 to 1935. Mass-produced but individually glazed. You can
still find pieces for under $500. Major pieces sell for as much as
$2,000.
