Empowerment Tip - Business Management Skills
Be Composed Under Pressure

Successful people with proper business management skills, are typically composed under pressure. One aspect of being composed under pressure is to avoid an emotional tirade during an altercation on the job. An occasional emotional outburst adds to charisma, but too many outbursts leads to a reputation of emotional immaturity. A hothead reputation does much more damage in a large bureaucracy than it does in a small, entrepreneurial firm. The reason is that large firms value a veneer of politeness and cordiality.

Another aspect of being composed under pressure is more likely to give positive thrust to your career. The person who presents a logical plan during a crisis or under other heavy pressure gains the edge. The ability to create order out of chaos is intuitively recognized as exemplary leadership behavior.
Len Ashton was the customer service manager at an American distributor of low-priced Asian cameras. Thousands of automatic 35mm cameras were placed with dealers, to be sold at a suggested retail price of $65. The cameras came with a warranty, backed by an 800 number for customer and dealer complaints. A mysterious defect arose with the camera under field conditions. When the temperature rose above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, the back would sometimes pop open, thus exposing and ruining the film.

Approximately one month after the cameras were shipped to dealers, the customer service phone lines were jammed with irate customers. Some customers wept as they described how their precious graduation photos were ruined. Within an hour after the first fifty calls were received, Len developed a crisis plan that was immediately approved by top management. Each caller would be offered three free rolls of film, a five dollar gift certificate toward photo equipment purchases, and a camera repair within 30 days. Customers who were still not satisfied were offered a full refund and one roll of film.
Within forty-five days almost all the complaints were handled, and only one dealer was lost. Len emerged as a corporate hero because he was able to resolve a crisis calmly. The edge he gained was a sizeable year-end bonus and assurances of a future promotion.
