The Whole World Stinks
Wise men and philosophers throughout
the ages have disagreed on many things, but many are in
unanimous agreement on one point: "We become what we think
about." Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "A man is what he thinks about
all day long." The Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius put it this
way: "A man's life is what his thoughts make of it." In the
Bible we find: "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he."
One Sunday afternoon, a cranky
grandfather was visiting his family. As he lay down to take a
nap, his grandson decided to have a little fun by putting
Limburger cheese on Grandfather's mustache. Soon, grandpa awoke
with a snort and charged out of the bedroom saying, "This room
stinks." Through the house he went, finding every room smelling
the same. Desperately he made his way outside only to find that
"The whole world stinks!"
So it is when we fill our minds with
negativism. Everything we experience and everybody we encounter
will carry the scent we hold in our mind.
The Baker and the
Farmer
A baker in a little country town
bought the butter he used from a nearby farmer. One day he
suspected that the bricks of butter were not full pounds, and
for several days he weighed them.
He was right. They were short weight,
and he had the farmer arrested.
At the trial the judge said to the
farmer, "I presume you have scales?"
"No, your honor."
"Then how do you manage to weigh the
butter you sell?" inquired the judge.
The farmer replied, "That's easily
explained, your honor. I have balances and for a weight I use a
one-pound loaf I buy from the baker."
Moral of the story:
In life, you get what you give. Don’t try and cheat others.
Complain! Complain! Complain!
It takes a disciplined spirit to
endure the monastery on Mount Serat in Spain. One of the
fundamental requirements of this religious order is that the
young men must maintain silence. Opportunities to speak are
scheduled once every two years, at which time they are allowed
to speak only two words.
One young initiate in this religious
order, who had completed his first two years of training, was
invited by his superior to make his first two-word presentation.
"Food terrible," he said.
Two years later the invitation was
once again extended. The young man used this forum to exclaim,
"Bed lumpy."
Arriving at his superior's office two
years later he proclaimed, "I quit." The superior looked at this
young monk and said, "You know, it doesn't surprise me a bit.
All you've done since you arrived is complain, complain,
complain.
Exaggerated? Maybe. What if you were
asked to share two words that describe your Life? Would your
focus be the lumps, bumps, and unfairness, or are you committed
to dwell on those things that are good, right, and lovely?
The Mountain
There were two warring tribes in the
Andes, one that lived in the lowlands and the other high in the
mountains. The mountain people invaded the lowlanders one day,
and as part of their plundering of the people, they kidnapped a
baby of one of the lowlander families and took the infant with
them back up into the mountains.
The lowlanders didn't know how to
climb the mountain. They didn't know any of the trails that the
mountain people used, and they didn't know where to find the
mountain people or how to track them in the steep terrain.
Even so, they sent out their best
party of fighting men to climb the mountain and bring the baby
home.
The men tried first one method of
climbing and then another. They tried one trail and then
another. After several days of effort, however, they had climbed
only several hundred feet.
Feeling hopeless and helpless, the
lowlander men decided that the cause was lost, and they prepared
to return to their village below.
As they were packing their gear for
the descent, they saw the baby's mother walking toward them.
They realized that she was coming down the mountain that they
hadn't figured out how to climb.
And then they saw that she had the
baby strapped to her back. How could that be?
One man greeted her and said, "We
couldn't climb this mountain. How did you do this when we, the
strongest and most able men in the village, couldn't do it?"
She shrugged her shoulders and said,
"It wasn't your baby."
Manage a Business successfully, handle a
business, is the key to the establishment and growth of the
business. The key to
successful management is to examine the
market environment and create profit and employment
opportunities that provide the
possible growth and fiscal
viability of the business.
Regardless of the Importance
of management, this region is often misunderstood and badly
executed, primarily because people focus
on the output in
place of the procedure for direction.
Toward the end Of
the 1980s, company managers became absorbed in improving product
quality, sometimes ignoring their role
vis-a-vis personnel.
The focus has been on reducing costs and increasing output,
while ignoring the long-term benefits of
motivating
employees. This shortsighted perspective tended to raise profits
in the short term, but created a dysfunctional
long-term
business atmosphere.
Simultaneously With the growth in
concern about quality, entrepreneurship brought the interest of
company. A sudden wave of
successful entrepreneurs appeared
to render sooner management theories obsolete. The press
centered on the new cult heroes Steve
Jobs and Steve Wozniack
(founders and developers of the Apple Computer) while ignoring
the marketing and coordinating abilities of
Mike Markula, the
executive responsible for Apple's business program. The story of
2 guys selling their Volkswagen bus to
construct the first
Apple computer was more romantic than that of the organizational
genius that enabled Apple to develop, market
and ship its
goods while rapidly becoming a significant business.
In
big Businesses, effective manage business skills necessitates
planning. Planning is essential for developing a company's
potential. But many small businesses do not recognize the demand
for long-term aims, because the small number of people involved
in managing the company implies equal responsibility in the
preparation and decision-making procedures. Nonetheless, the
need for
preparation is as vital in a small business as it's
in a large one.
This manual Focuses on the value of good
management practices. Specifically, it addresses the
responsibilities of managing the
external and internal
environments.
Managing A Business Effectively: The
External Environment. Five decades ago, Alvin Toffler suggested
that the vision of the
taxpayer at the tight grip of an
omnipotent waiver could be replaced through an organizational
arrangement of ad-hocracy. The
traditional business
organization implied a social contract between workers and
employers. By adhering to a predetermined set of
obligations
and sharply defined functions and responsibilities, employees
received a predefined set of rewards. The Organizational
structure that Toffler predicted in 1970 became the norm 20
decades later, and it came altered concepts of authority. As
organizations became more transitory, the authority of the
organization and firm has been replaced with the jurisdiction of
the
individual supervisor. This entrepreneurial management
model is now being replicated throughout society. Consequently,
the
individual small business operator must internalize ever
increasing organizational purposes.
Another Shift In the
present business environment is dealing with government
agencies. Their effect on the conduct of company most
recently appears to have improved. As businesses fail to attain
high levels of ethical behaviour or individual businesses
exhibit
specific lapses, the government rushes in to fill the
breach with regulations.
Effective Communications play
an integral role in operating and managing any thriving small
business. With open communications
modifications and their
effects on the business are quickly shared. Your firm then has
the time and skills needed to respond to
changes and take
advantage of evolving opportunities.
The next Checklist
addressing how you would react to an employee's proposal
provides an assessment of the communication process in
your
company. Place a check next to the statements that are commonly
heard in your business.
Balancing Schedules Stress and
Personnel. With no organization and decent control the
compressed time schedules related to
contemporary company can
cause stress and make extraordinary demands on individuals. A
successful management structure can reduce
stress and channel
the effective capacity of workers into business growth and
profits.
Setting Duties Tasks and Responsibilities. An
organization is distinguished by the nature and determination of
employees'
responsibilities tasks and obligations. While many
organizations use different procedures for determining these it
is vital that
they be clearly defined.
The core of
any Organization is its people and their functions. Duties
responsibilities and tasks frequently evolve into an ad hoc
manner. A typical firm starts with a couple of people frequently
one performing all duties. As the company develops others are
hired to fulfill certain functions often on a practical basis.
Roles that were handled by consultants and experts beyond the
firm
now are managed internally. As new needs emerge new
roles are developed.
Another key to Successful direction
is located in controlling battle. Conflict cannot be eliminated
from either the company or the
social actions of the
enterprise. A measure of the business's success is that the
degree to which conflict can be subjected and
the energies
associated with it channeled to build up the company. Although
establishing policies and processes represents the
tangible
component of organization and management the mechanics to endure
and embody barriers to the established operation serve
as the
real gist of a firm that will survive and prosper.
Even
though you May discover that certain events are impacting your
company be careful to not change the organizational structure
of your company without discussing it with your management
staff. Employees generally can accomplish goals despite
organizational
arrangements imposed by management. Since
restructuring involves spending a lot of time studying new rules
implementing a new
organizational structure is costly.
The essence of A successful organization can be simply
summarized than employed. The Following checklist can help you
determine
steps to make sure your management Construction is
sufficient. Verify the entries that apply to your firm and also
find Out what
measures your business needs to take to improve
its management Construction.
