A $1.11 Miracle (True Story!)

Tess was a precocious eight year old when she heard her Mom and Dad talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money.

They were moving to a rental apartment complex next month because Daddy didn’t have the money for the doctor bills and their house. Only a very costly surgery could save him now and it was looking like there was no-one to loan them the money. She heard Daddy say to her tearful Mother with whispered desperation, “Only a miracle can save him now.”

Tess went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar from its hiding place in the closet. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Three times, even. The total had to be exactly perfect. No chance here for mistakes.

Carefully placing the coins back in the jar and twisting on the cap, she slipped out the back door and made her way 6 blocks to Rexall’s Drug Store with the big red Indian Chief sign above the door.

She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy at this moment. Tess twisted her feet to make a scuffing noise. Nothing. She cleared her throat with the most disgusting sound she could muster. No good.

Finally she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. That did it!

“And what do you want?” the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. “I’m talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven’t seen in ages,”He said without waiting for a reply to his question.

“Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,” Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. “He’s really, really sick… and I want to buy a miracle.”

“I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist.

“His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?”

“We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said, softening a little. “Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn’t enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.”

The pharmacist’s brother was a well dressed man. He stooped down and asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?”

“I don’t know,” Tess replied with her eyes welling up. “I just know he’s really sick and Mommy says he needs an operation. But my Daddy can’t pay for it, so I want to use my money.”

“How much do you have?” asked the man from Chicago. “One dollar and eleven cents,” Tess answered barely audibly. “And it’s all the money I have, but I can get some more if I need to."

“Well, what a coincidence,” smiled the man. “A dollar and eleven cents – the exact price of a miracle for little brothers.” He took her money in one hand and with the other hand he grasped her mitten and said, “Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let’s see if I have the kind of miracle you need.”

That well dressed man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a surgeon, specializing in neuro-surgery. The operation was completed without charge and it wasn’t long until Andrew was home again and doing well. Mom and Dad were happily talking about the chain of events that had led them to this place.

“That surgery,” her Mom whispered. “was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost?”

Tess smiled. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost… one dollar and eleven cents … plus the faith of a little child.

Chance Encounter

Mark was walking home from school one day when he noticed the boy ahead of him had tripped and dropped all of the books he was carrying, along with two sweaters, a baseball bat, a glove and a small tape recorder.

Mark knelt down and helped the boy pick up the scattered articles. Since they were going the same way, he helped to carry part of the burden. As they walked Mark discovered the boy’s name was Bill, that he loved video games, baseball and history, and that he was having lots of trouble with his other subjects and that he had just broken up with his girlfriend. They arrived at Bill’s home first and Mark was invited in for a Coke and to watch some television. The afternoon passed pleasantly with a few laughs and some shared small talk, then Mark went home.

They continued to see each other around school, had lunch together once or twice, then both graduated from junior high school. They ended up in the same high school where they had brief contacts over the years. Finally the long awaited senior year came and three weeks before graduation, Bill asked Mark if they could talk.

Bill reminded him of the day years ago when they had first met. “Did you ever wonder why I was carrying so many things home that day?” asked Bill. “You see, I cleaned out my locker because I didn’t want to leave a mess for anyone else. I had stored away some of my mother's sleeping pills and I was going home to commit suicide. But after we spent some time together talking and laughing, I realized that if I had killed myself, I would have missed that time and so many others that might follow. So you see, Mark, when you picked up those books that day, you did a lot more, you saved my life.”

Handle a Business successfully, handle a business, is the key to the establishment and growth of the company. The key to
successful management is to examine the market environment and create profit and employment opportunities that provide the
possible growth and financial viability of the business enterprise.

Regardless of the Significance of management, this area is often misunderstood and badly executed, chiefly because people focus on
the output rather than the process of management.

Toward the end Of the 1980s, company managers became consumed in enhancing product quality, sometimes ignoring their role
vis-a-vis personnel. The focus was on reducing costs and increasing output, while ignoring the long-term advantages of motivating
employees. This shortsighted view tended to increase profits in the short term, but created a dysfunctional long-term business
atmosphere.

Simultaneously With the growth in concern about quality, entrepreneurship brought the attention of company. A sudden wave of
successful entrepreneurs seemed to render sooner management theories obsolete. The press focused on the new cult heroes Steve Jobs
and Steve Wozniack (founders and developers of the Apple Computer) while ignoring the marketing and coordinating abilities of Mike
Markula, the executive accountable for Apple's business plan. The story of 2 men selling their Volkswagen bus to construct the
first Apple computer was more romantic than that of their organizational genius that enabled Apple to develop, market and ship its
goods while rapidly turning into a significant business.

In big Businesses, effective handle business abilities necessitates preparation. Planning is essential for developing a firm's
potential. However, many small businesses do not recognize the demand for long-range plans, since the small number of individuals
involved in operating the company implies equal responsibility in the planning and decision-making procedures. Nevertheless, the
requirement for planning is as important in a small business as it is at a large one.

This manual Focuses on the importance of good management practices. Specifically, it addresses the responsibilities of managing
the internal and external environments.

Managing A Business Effectively: The External Environment. Five years ago, Alvin Toffler suggested that the vision of the citizen
at the tight grasp of an omnipotent waiver could be substituted by an organizational structure of ad-hocracy. The conventional
company organization implied a social contract between employees and employers. By adhering to a fixed set of obligations and
sharply defined roles and responsibilities, employees received a predefined set of rewards. The Organizational structure which
Toffler predicted in 1970 became the norm 20 decades later, and with it arrived altered concepts of authority. As associations
became transitory, the authority of the company and firm has been replaced with the jurisdiction of the individual manager. This
entrepreneurial management version is currently being replicated throughout society. Consequently, the individual small business
operator must internalize ever increasing organizational functions.

Another Shift In the present business environment is dealing with government agencies. Their influence on the conduct of company
most recently appears to have improved. As businesses fail to achieve high levels of ethical behaviour or individual companies
display particular lapses, the government rushes in to fill the breach with its regulations.

Effective Communications play an integral role in operating and managing any successful small business. With open communications
changes and their effects on the business are quickly shared. Your company then has the time and skills required to respond to
changes and take advantage of evolving opportunities.

The next Checklist addressing how you would respond to a worker's suggestion provides an evaluation of the communication process
in your company. Put a check beside the statements that are generally heard in your company.

Balancing Schedules Stress and Personnel. Without organization and good control the compressed time schedules related to
contemporary business can lead to stress and make exceptional demands on people. An effective management structure can lessen
stress and channel the productive capacity of employees into company growth and profits.

Setting Duties Tasks and Responsibilities. An organization is distinguished by the nature and determination of employees' duties
tasks and obligations. While many organizations use different methods for discovering these it is vital that they be clearly
defined.

The core of any Organization is its people and their own functions. Duties responsibilities and tasks often evolve in an ad hoc
manner. A typical firm starts with a few individuals frequently one doing all duties. As the firm grows others are hired to
fulfill certain functions often on a functional basis. Roles which were handled by consultants and specialists outside the firm
now are handled internally. As new needs emerge new roles are developed.

Another crucial to Successful management is located in controlling battle. Conflict cannot be removed from either the business or
the social activities of this enterprise. A measure of the business's success is the degree to which conflict may be subjected and
the energies associated with it channeled to build up the firm. Though establishing policies and procedures represents the
tangible aspect of organization and management the mechanisms to endure and embody challenges to the established performance
function as the actual gist of a firm which will survive and prosper.

Even though you May find that particular events are impacting your business be careful not to alter the organizational structure
of your company without discussing it with your management staff. Employees normally can achieve goals despite organizational
arrangements imposed by management. Since restructuring involves spending a great deal of time studying new guidelines
implementing a new organizational structure is pricey.

The essence of A successful organization can be simply summarized than employed. The Following checklist can help you determine
measures to make sure your direction Structure is sufficient. Check the entries that apply to your company and also find Out what
steps your company needs to take to enhance its management Structure.
