FitnessNutrition
If you want to get a youngster who is a
picky-eater to expand his food selection, then try to make a game of
it. Experts tell us it can take as many as 10 tries before a child
takes easily to a new food you want to introduce. It may work best to
provide just one new food at a meal and integrate it with some
favorite foods to make it more appealing. Consider cutting new foods
up into fun shapes or decorating them with other fun foods you know
the child likes. Most importantly, make sure the child sees you eating
the food as well. Helping your child get used to new and different
foods is a very important part of good nutrition, so trust your
instincts, go slow and be patient!
Oprah Winfrey used the phrase
"clean eating" in her book Oprah's Kitchen. It's helpful to think of
clean eating as a good way to approach food. Simple preparations,
lighter salad dressings, using less oils and fats (though still a bit
for flavor!), and keeping things as fresh as possible - all these
ideas contribute to her way of clean eating. Oprah loved her fried
chicken - and presents a clean way of cooking it in her book. The
bottom line is, if you have a choice between fancy and heavy vs.
simple and fresh, go with the latter and your scale will thank you, no
matter what food you're eating.
Try not to buy into the fact that
fruit juices and vegetable juices are a healthy beverage option. Many
store bought varieties are riddled with sugar, sodium, and other
additives that make them no better than something like a soda. It is
best to stick to whole fruits. However, if you do desire fruit juice,
the best way is to make your own with a juicer and fresh fruit and
vegetables.
Anti Aging
Make sure you're getting enough vitamin D in your
diet. If you're not, try eating more fish or drinking more milk. If
you can't do either of those, look into supplements. Vitamin D has
been shown to slow the aging process and can keep you looking and
feeling young much longer. Plus, it has other health benefits as well!
Get quality sleep on a regular basis to keep your body balanced and
better equipped to age gracefully! Many people of all ages suffer from
lack of sleep and poor quality of it and it is even more important to
us as we get older. Seek medical advice if you are not getting the
sleep you need and do not underestimate the importance of it to you!
Maintain a positive attitude. You're only as old as you feel, and if
you stay positive aging can be a wonderful time of your life. Make
sure you start every day giving thanks for what you have in your life,
and watch how much better the day is when you approach it happily.
Dental Care
You can help your child overcome fears of the
dentist by playing dentist together. Be the dentist and have them be a
patient. Count how many teeth are in the child's mouth using a
toothbrush. After you have finished, encourage your child to play
dentist with a stuffed toy or doll.
Although this is likely common
knowledge to you, you should always brush your teeth a minimum of two
times each day. However, it is important that you are brushing with a
toothpaste that contains fluoride. Make sure you brush in a circular
motion on each tooth, and avoid brushing too hard because this can
damage your gums.
When you brush your teeth can be just as
important as how often you brush your teeth. Although most dentists
recommend brushing twice a day, it is important to make one of those
brushings before you go to sleep at night. The production of saliva is
much slower during sleep, and less saliva can allow damaging bacteria
to grow.
Hair Care
The natural oils in your hair are there for a
reason, so take care not to strip them unnecessarily when you shampoo.
Though you may have naturally oily hair, applying harsh shampoos that
strip oils away may in fact promote additional oiliness. Instead,
choose a gentle shampoo that isn't as harmful to your hair. You can
even wash with just conditioner a couple of times a week.
Prior to
putting on shampoo, get your hair very wet. This will help your hair
stay protected, as the washing process takes place. In addition, aim
to apply about a quarter-size dab of shampoo onto your head, rubbing
it in your hands before putting it on your hair. Too much shampoo
could make your hair look drab and lifeless.
Never use hot water on
your hair. Water that is too hot can dry out even the healthiest hair,
leaving it dull and lifeless. Instead, rinse with cool water after you
clean your hair. Not only is the temperature easier on your locks, it
will tighten up the cuticle of the hair, helping to enhance shine.
Muscle
Building
Spread your workouts out so that you are
only lifting weights every other day. Spend one day working out your
entire body, and then use the next day to rest. Your muscles will grow
while you rest, not while you are working out. Even though it might
feel like you are doing nothing on your days off, your body is still
working hard.
Fill up on carbohydrates after a workout. It has been
proven that if you do this, on the days that you are not going to work
out, you will be rebuilding your muscles faster. Eating carbs after a
workout increases insulin levels, which slows down the rate that your
body breaks down protein.
Pay attention to your body fat and
measure it on a regular basis. Try not to be discouraged if there is
not significant weight loss when building muscle, because your weight
might not change much using a weight and muscle building routine. Your
body fat is a better measure of your overall health as opposed to
weight.
